I still remember school, a place to eat
I still remember trays of food each day
I still remember beans and rice were neat
And lunchtime was for eating, not for play
The other kids had funds to get them through
The other kids had money for their needs
I wonder if those “rich kids” cared or knew
How many kids a single dollar feeds
A single dollar bought me beans and rice
A single dollar filled my tray with hope
Sometimes the “rich kids” just weren’t very nice
If I was drowning, would they toss a rope?
A rope is just a dollar in this tale
And hunger is a test those kids would fail.
