6 Design Principle: Start Simply
As we think about how to design and teach well online, you may be wondering how and where to even begin.
To get you thinking and put your mind at ease about the process of online course design, we will share two resources that will provide an overview and encouragement to start simply.
First, see this video for an introduction to online course design.
Then, listen to this TOPCast (The Online Teaching Podcast) hosted by the University of Central Florida’s, Dr. Kelvin Thompson (Links to an external site.), Executive Director of the Center for Distributed Learning, and Dr. Tom Cavanagh (Links to an external site.), Vice Provost for Digital Learning.
They will talk through how “starting simply”, with the essentials, in online design/teaching and then iterating over time will make for a more successful experience for all concerned.
The 18-minute Podcast is available below. You can listen from your computer, or search for it via your mobile podcast app. If you have time, check out the show notes (listed on their website). They are always a wealth of resources. Note that you can also become a subscribed listener.
Bonus! Podcasts are an excellent way to support inclusive learning. You can easily listen on the go (driving, cleaning, exercising, breaks at work, etc.) If you haven’t searched for podcasts related to your content area, give this a try! For those hard of hearing or who would prefer to read information, there is also a transcript available on the website.
