13.13 Physical Activity: Finding a Location that Works for You
Some might think that physical activity or exercise has to take place in a particular location, like a fitness center. In reality, it doesn’t matter where you’re active, so long as you are. What kinds of locations might be the most convenient, safe, and fun for you? Consider these questions to accomplish your goals:
- Can you be active at home, outdoors, or in a public space?
- Do you have access to appropriate equipment?
- If you want to use a fitness center, can you find one that’s conveniently located and affordable? This could include a local gym, community center, personal trainer, or fitness group.
Many campuses or community education programs offer intramural sports and group fitness classes, or you may also find a less formal group that meets regularly for outdoor yoga, touch football, circuit training, pick-up basketball, or jogging. Some are even free. Participating in these types of things can be great ways to not only reach fitness goals, but also meet people.
At times, some people might feel limited in the types of activities in which they can participate due to religious views, family obligations, access to transportation, associated costs, previous experiences, or gender- or size-related bias within certain sports or activities, for example. More inclusive sports and activities do exist, but in any case, you don’t necessarily need to seek out formally organized activities offered through a gym or recreation center to reap the health benefits of physical activity.
