The Quiet North

Autumn Bestgen

The snow has fallen the air is cold.
The Town is dark but shines lights of gold.
The houses were warmed by the hot fires.
The night is calm but filled with desires.
As morning arrives and the child wakes.
They look outside and see snowflakes.
But on the way to school, they don’t hear a sound.
Because they didn’t see any birds around.
They asked their parents why the birds were gone.
Because they missed watching the birds on the lawn.
The parents said they went South for the season.
But the child never fully understood the reason.
The birds get too cold and don’t have any fun.
That’s when they decide they are done.
But once the South gets too hot and they get all sweaty.
That’s when they know the North is ready.
So, until that time comes the North is quiet.
It must wait till it has a better climate.
Finally, the snow disappears.
So, then the birds can reappear.
The spring is filled with a beautiful song.
That will last almost a whole year long.
The town is filled with birds and flowers.
The kids go outside and play for hours.
The day is filled with happiness and love.
As the birds fly just up above.
The birds have their routine and migrate each year.
As they adventure some new frontiers.
