Winter Solstice II
Sarah Royer-Stoll
A cold wind carries my breath as the hawk’s
Strong wings wrap around the setting sun
On this shortest day of the year, we need all
The light we can find. A glimmer of gold reflects
On his feathers, rich caramel and burnt sienna
You left me half my life ago
Each year becomes easier and even more unjust
Memories are set and traditions are solidified
Sometimes I forget to cry for you, but it’s not
For lack of grief. The pain gets a bit more blurry
The days curve; it is easier to wake in the morning
The longest night and I hope I can sleep through
You travel now through dreams and my witness
I can pour out my love for others, make you proud
Use your vivid absence as a catalyst for change
Honor your life through my own vivid intentions
I can use your light as a guide, my own or others’
Honor your life, my own and others’. I remember
