INtroduction to Disciplines

Horse disciplines are the different ways the people compete on horseback.  This is not a complete list, but will give you the more common disciplines and team sports that are around.  Horse disciplines can be broken down into about three categories based on the type of saddle and equipment that is used: English, Western, Sports.

SAddle types

The main difference is between English and Western Saddles is:

• English saddle: is made of a smoother softer leather and has smaller stirrup leathers and irons.
• Western Saddle: usually has a horn and is made of thicker leather with wider stirrups and leathers.

English Disciplines

Dressage, Jumping, Eventing, Saddleseat, Endurance, Hunt Seat

Western Disciplines

Western Pleasure, Reining, Barrel Racing, Cutting, Roping, Western Dressage

Sports

Polo, Polocrosse, Combined Driving
