Common Questions You Can Answer with Canvas Learning Analytics

When we talk about learning analytics we’re talking about actionable data and useful tools that can support and improve teaching and learning. Every action that students and instructors take in a Canvas course site generates data. Your Canvas course collects and stores that data, and there are tools in Canvas that allow you to visualize that data. Below are commonly asked questions that you can address with tools available to you in your Canvas course sites.

  1. How does this student’s performance compare to that of their peers?
  2. How are students in Section 1 performing compared to students in Section 2?
  3. How can I see which students have late or missing assignments so I can reach out to them?
  4. How do I see a snapshot of a single student’s participation in my Canvas site?
  5. Are my students accessing the course materials?
  6. Which quiz questions did my students struggle with the most?
  7. Which quiz questions best predicted student performance?
  8. Are my students completing work in course Modules?
  9. Are my students accessing the videos available on my site?

Canvas data provides a starting point, but don’t rely solely on a dashboard to determine if your students are engaging required material. Test your assumptions and utilize best practices within your course, assignments, and grading design to encourage students to engage with the material.
